Underwater Communication System
Being
able to communicate easily underwater has always been a "forbidden dream" for
many underwater divers. For commercial use many complex, clumsy and expensive
systems have been on the market for quite some time. The Ocean REEF underwater
communication NEPTUNE system is designed for a wide variety of commercial,
military, emergency assistance and search and rescue dive operations. It
is also beneficial for scientific or research purposes, easier instruction,
underwater leadership and general recreational uses. The Ocean REEF Neptune
communication system is compact in dimension and weight. Powerful and compatible
with other underwater communicators, it's made with sturdy components and can be
used even in the most extreme conditions.

M-101A- is a receiving unit which can be used by any underwater diver with a
conventional mask or full face mask. The M-101 has an efficient and
extremely useful impulse transmission system (simple signals like Morse code)
which increases its communication potential above and beyond a simple receiver.
It has a small, sturdy, compact design that is easy to attach to the strap of a
mask. The M-101A works with a standard 9 volts alkaline battery.
M-105 - is a
professional surface station. It has been designed to operate with any
single sideband transceiver operating on the same frequency and within range. Comes standard with one frequency, 32.768 Hz.
However, single sideband allows the user to utilize the upper or lower
bandwidth. Channel number one is 32.768 Hz upper sideband. Channel
number two is 32.768 Hz lower sideband (standard channels). Channels
number three through six can be whatever the user desires. M-105 operates
on 8 "C" size alkaline batteries and comes standard with 1 hand held microphone
and 1 transducer including 10 Mt. (35 feet) of transducer cable. Located

New Low Profile Space System
Recreational
divers have always and mainly used a conventional mask and regulator with the
full face mask being used by professionals and military personnel. Ocean
Reef is introducing a new concept to the recreational diver, with a lot of new
applications and options for both recreational and professional divers.
It's time to forget the conventional mask and the
conventional regulator. It's time for a change.
Here
are some reasons why:
- Thermal Protection: There is
no conventional mask that will protect your face from the cold or polluted
water in the way that Neptune II does.
- Visibility: Try to find a
conventional mask that gives you a spherical 180° vision.
- Breathing: Which regulator
gives you the possibility to breath with the nose as mother nature taught us
to do?
- Safety: Neptune II NIRA can
be equipped, simultaneously, with 2 regulators and the GSM to give you the
opportunity to stay in touch with you buddies and the surface.
- Communication: With GSM and
Neptune NIRA you can hear, ask, share emotions with you buddies and let you
understand easily by speaking, not sign language.
- Price: The Neptune II NIRA
costs, more or less, the same as the best "standard" mask + a conventional
high quality regulator. However, it does a lot for you and can give you
much, much more!
The Neptune System Includes:
- Diving Full Face Mask Neptune II and accessories NIRA
- Neptune Integrated Regulator Adapter
- Accessories: GSM - M101 - M103 - M104 Underwater
Wireless Communication systems.
Neptune II Full Face Mask - The
innovative Full Face Mask NEPTUNE II is the result of intense research and
patient experience acquired in the development and production of military
protection equipment. The Ocean REEF Group spent tens of thousands of
hours testing the NEPTUNE II in laboratories and real world situations.
The surface based versions of the FFM have received international approval in
the civil sector and have been adopted by specialized departments of numerous
Military and Defense organizations for use in anti - Nuclear - Biological -
Chemical (NBC) operations. From the Gulf War to the Antarctic expeditions,
from military to spacecraft applications, from civil to sports
activities.....The Full Face Mask project, involving more than 50 different
types of masks, started in 1985 and has reached the ultimate in unique
experiences of extreme conditions and applications. This allows Ocean REEF
to be recognized as THE FULL FACE MASK COMPANY
wherever you dive.
The NEPTUNE II has been engineered for underwater
environments. It has been designed to use two second stages and was
designed to accept underwater (water/water, water/surface) communication units.
The concept of NEPTUNE II makes possible the use of the majority of available
diving regulators in the market. That allows the use of personal regulator
without the need to get a brand new one. The universal regulator
attachment (two sizes) with the DIN fitting, allows almost any regulator to be
attached to the mask. The NEPTUNE II has been designed for both commercial
and recreational purposes. The Full Face Mask is built with the highest
quality materials, providing maximum protection against extreme conditions and
incidental impact. All these features in a product that weighs only 200
gr. (in water).
Principle Technical Characteristics
- Adaptability
The
patented bellows type skirt with "spring profile" and large sealing surface
(from 30 to 45mm, which is double that of a conventional mask) is molded by
premium grade silicone rubber. The spring effect is obtained thanks to
the particular combination between the "double S" section and the internal
ribs, which allows to reach the right compromise between the fitting comfort
and the hardness to support the main structure of the full face mask.
The structure has two primary benefits. It allows the mask to "float"
comfortably in front of the face and allows for an exceptional fit for a large
percentage of faces (more than 80% of those tested). The face seal and
strap concept are Ocean REEF patents.
- Visual Field
The
visor, made of transparent polycarbonate, was studied in order to have the
optical part wider and closer to the face. This maximizes the visual
field, particularly the peripheral area. The picture is a report of the
visual field of the mask. The dark area represents the monocular visual
field obtained with one eye only, meanwhile the lighter area shows
the binocular visual field (obtained by 2 eyes together). The
visible light transfer of the visor is 92%.
- The Head Harness - FRB II
The
head harness straps are directly attached to the sturdy face shield in a
design that allows the pressure to be transmitted uniformly along the mask's
skirt. This is a benefit unique to the NEPTUNE II. The low
elasticity of the 6 straps of head harness (the spider) holds the mask in a
firm position. However at the same time the spider is able to compensate
for the different neoprene hood thickness by a more calibrate pressure .
Due to the new buckle FRB II (Fast Rotating Buckle), the mask can be worn and
taken off quickly, by releasing the lower strap buckles. The removal of
the NEPTUNE II is quite easy and is preformed by pulling on the 2 quick
release balls at the front lower side of the harness. The tip of each
strap has a larger profile allowing an easier find while wearing neoprene
gloves. The material used for the clamping band resists at -30° C and
permits the use of the NEPTUNE II in extreme conditions.
- External Environment Protection
It is also possible to directly attach the mask to the hood of a
watertight wet suit, creating a completely watertight seal, while still
allowing easy mask release. Creating a fully watertight seal helps
protect the diver in cases of polluted diving environments.
- Air Circulation and limitation of COČ
In
the NEPTUNE II a system for air circulation was designed to avoid any
fogging of the mask while reducing the amount of CO and COČ inhaled. The
liquid silicone oral-nasal pocket is furnished with two one way valves
where the air goes through. Exhaled air is directed through the valve
under the oral-nasal pocket, limiting the mixing of this "dead air" (having a
high percentage of Carbon Dioxide) with the fresh air coming from the
regulator. The cover of exhalation valve may be rotated to direct the
bubbles (this is quite important to avoid possible interference's while using
a wireless communication system). A low inner volume (only 750cc) offers
a quick ventilation of all the mask and a lower buoyancy.
- Draining
The
NEPTUNE II inside pressure is equal to the external one because the diver
breaths inside of the mask and the pressure is automatically compensated by
the regulator. This characteristic avoids any "sucker effect"
during the dive, typical of the conventional masks, and any possible water
leakage. However, if for any reason there would be the need to remove
the water from inside the mask, there would be no problem. You simply
exhale or press the exhaust button of the regulator, this makes the water flow
out from the lower exhaust valve.
- Mechanical and scratching resistance
The visor of the NEPTUNE II can resist the impact of a 6.35mm steel
sphere traveling at a speed of 540 km per hour. It is double side coated
by a siloxane resin to increase the scratching resistance. To improve
protection during carrying, the NEPTUNE II has a removable protective shield
(remove before diving).
- The 2D equalization system
A
movable and adjustable plate with 2 anatomic silicone nuts, has been designed
to allow equalization during a dive. The equalization is quite easy. By
pressing the upper side of the visor, the plate with the 2 nuts moves back and
close the nostrils. The 3D equalization system could be adjusted to have the
right position in according of individual's nose. The nuts may be move up and
down depending on the length of the individual's nose. They have an
eccentric assembly on the plate and it allows the fitting of larger or
narrower noses. The plate has 3 fixed adjustments + a micro adjustment
for each position. It makes equalization very comfortable and avoids any
undesired pressure during the dive, The 3D equalization system is an
Ocean REEF patent.
- Regulator Attachment
A
special adapter comes with the mask allowing the connection of many types of
regulators to the NEPTUNE II. The NEPTUNE II is supplied with a medium
size regulator attachment and a small size attachment is available.
Ocean REEF recommends the use of an adjustable regulator without over
injection characteristics. You can check with you Ocean REEF dealer for
proper air flow of the regulator. It is also possible to connect two
second stages to the mask simultaneously. NEPTUNE II may be used with 2
regulators at the same time.
- Optional Accessories
*Polar Tex Strap for extreme
low temperature applications.
*Support System for optical lenses - A lens
frame specially designed for the NEPTUNE II masks allows the use of standard
optical lenses (not included) during the dive. This accessory which is
both lightweight and strong, can easily be inserted inside the mask, and
quickly removed.
*Small size regulator attachment for regulators
with lower dimensions.
NEPTUNE II NIRA
NEPTUNE
II NIRA is the integration of a dedicated regulator (NIRA) to the NEPTUNE II
full face mask. NIRA, Neptune Integrated Regulator Adapter, is an injected
and adjustable regulator specifically designed for the full face mask
characteristics. To obtain the high-test performance level of your
NEPTUNE II mask, we recommend that the NIRA be used in conjunction with it.
The NIRA is equipped with an aspiration deflector that has 2 possible positions,
"surf" and "dive". The deflector reduces or increases the air flow
avoiding (in the "surf" position) any possible "free flow" cause by undesirable
impacts on the surface. The deflector positions are well marked, for easy
identification, while wearing the mask. The NIRA is also equipped with an
adjustable knob which allows the diver to equalize in the proper way the air
flow of the 2nd stage in accordance with the divers position and depth.
The NIRA can be easily removed from the front side of the NEPTUNE II allowing
the retrofitting of the standard regulator connector. The NIRA may be
assembled on any NEPTUNE II and all previous releases of Ocean REEF Full Face
masks. Ask your dealer to order the proper kit. With the NIRA
it's always possible to use an additional regulator connected to the side port.
The NIRA is specially recommended for low temperature applications where
conventional regulators have the tendency to freeze. The NIRA is a
lightweight regulator.
The NEPTUNE II NIRA is a compact, light and very
comfortable diving full face mask, it is available in 2 additional versions
provided with a 1st stage.
- NEPTUNE II NIRA 6600

(3 colors available) with a 921 gr. chromed brass and
stainless steel piston 1st stage with 2 HP ports, 4 LP ports and swivel joke.
- NEPTUNE II NIRA TR94 POLAR
(3 colors available) with a 1320 gr. chromed plate brass and
stainless steel balanced membrane 1st stage with 2 HP ports, 4 LP ports,
swivel joke and environmental kit.
Optional accessories for Neptune masks
- Support system for optical lens is a lens frame
specially designed for the NEPTUNE II masks and allows the use of standard
optical lenses (not included) during the dive. This accessory is easily
assembled inside of the mask, may be quickly removed and is light and strong.
- Small size Regulator Attachment is for regulators with
lower dimensions.
- NIRA hose quick connection allows a quick disconnection
or connection of the Neptune NIRA from he 1st stage. They are male and
female chromed plated brass parts that allow quick release of the connection
to the low pressure hose.
- NIRA/hose swivel connection is made of chromed plated
brass. It is attached to the NIRA and the LP hose, allowing a more
comfortable positioning of the hose.

About
Underwater Communication
Talking underwater requires some special
attention to the following
- Talk slowly with clear pronunciation.
- Talk briefly
- While you talk, exhale slowly.
- Direct exhaust bubbles away from the antenna by
moving the exhaust deflector. Air bubbles are a terrible filter for
ultrasonic frequencies.
Ultrasonic communication is very sensitive to the
environment. Reflections are always possible, mainly inside
square swimming pools. In this case the noise increases and an
undesired "Larsen effects" could appear. Water thermocline
(quick water temperature changes) and air bubbles from your regulator are
another reason for poor quality transmissions. Microbubbles of air
stitching on the antenna, due to breathing or cavitation, could be the
reason for a dramatic reduction of transmission power. Obstacles as
well as rocks and wrecks decrease the transmission quality generating
"shadows area" where it could be difficult if not impossible to have
communication. |

Principle Technical Characteristics
The Ocean Reef underwater communication
system consists in three separate units and a forth professional surface
station.
GSM - is a transceiver unit
which has been designed for the NEPTUNE II mask. It works with a PTT (Push
TO Talk) mechanism that forewarns the beginning of a vocal transmission
using sound impulses. It can be assembled on the NEPTUNE II
strap. You can talk directly, while diving, with other M-101, GSM, or
other communication system units using the same transmission frequency (32.768
Hz). You may also speak with those using the M-103 or M-104 surface units.
The GSM has a high wireless communication technology based on a deep study of
the full face mask acoustic characteristics, filtration of dirty frequencies
generated by air bubbles and mask vibration, amplification of signal and
modulation to the antenna. The GSM works with a standard 9 volt battery.
The GSM is supplied with a "HOT MIC" microphone, made by a special diaphragm
encapsulated with 2 osmotic membranes. HOT MIC is a dynamic microphone
with a high level of acoustic responding. The GSM technology is based on 2
main hardware/software configurations.
The
first is the microphone. GSM uses a "Hot Mic", a special dynamic
microphone made by a double sided acoustic membrane, able to get the sounds
from both sides and consequently able to have a "better respond" and a better
"translation" of mechanical acoustic wave to a difference of voltage.
Hot Mic is encapsulated in 2 osmotic and waterproof membranes. They
maintain the diaphragm dry but, at the same time they allow the air to go
through. This generates the possibility of a limited loss of power by
the sound and a high transmission between the outside and the inside of the
microphone. It makes the Hot Mic much better than the conventional
ceramic microphones sealed in a plastic capsule.
The
second main part of GSM is the "Black Box". It is the combination of a
filter, an amplifier and a modulator. When we use a full face mask
and we talk, we generate what we call "dirty frequencies". They are the
vibrations of the face shield by talking (generally high frequencies) and the
bubble noise (generally low frequencies). If we do not eliminate these
"dirty frequencies" they will be amplified and transmitted through the antenna
to the receiver, generating the typical "full mouth noise". The receiver
will have a lot of difficulties separating the right signal, containing the
voice, from these disturbs. The acoustic volume and the proper
"echo reflections" characteristics of Neptune II have been deeply studied to
generate a proper filtration. By doing this, the wrong and undesired
frequencies are eliminated before amplification, modulation and sent to the
transmitting antenna.
M-101A
- is a receiving unit which can be used by any underwater diver with a
conventional mask or full face mask.
Located
in the front panel is a volume control, 12 volt external receptacle, Channel
select, Mic/Earphone receptacle and Heavy Duty Panel Speaker. Its housed
in a rugged container.
